Ayurveda

What Is Ayurveda?

It is a belief by many people that there is a very delicate balance between mind, body and spirit. This is the belief of many people who subscribe to practice Of Ayurvedic Medicine “Ayurevda” this medicine was developed about 3,000 years ago in India. It is known as one of the world’s oldest Holistic (whole body) healing systems. It’s main purpose is not to fight disease but rather to promote good health. Also specific health problems may be treated using this method. This form of medicine has gained so much popularity that in America it is considered a form “complimentary and alternative medicine”(CAM). It is the belief of those who practice CAM therapy is based on five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The combination of these basic elements in the human body form three life forces or energies called Doshas. The working of the body is controlled by three Dohas. They are: Vata Dosha(space and air); Pitta Dosha(fire and water); and Kapa Dosha(water and earth). There is a unique mix of the three Doshas every body inherits. But one is usually stronger than the others. Each Dosha controls different body functions. It is widely believed that one’s chance of getting sick and health problems is linked to the balance of your Doshas. VATA DOSHA Those who practice Ayurevda believe this is the most powerful of all three Doshas. It controls very basic body functions, like how cell divide. It also controls the mind, breathing, blood flow, heart function and the ability to get rid of waste through the intestines. Things that can disrupt are eating again soon after a meal, fear, grief and staying up too late.

If vata dosha is one’s main life force that person is more likely to develop conditions like anxiety, asthma, heart disease, skin problems and rheumatoid arthritis.

Pitta Dosha This energy control digestion, metabolism(how well food is broken down) and certain hormones that are linked to appetite. Things that could that disrupt it are eating spicy or sour foods and spending too much time in the sun’ If this is one’s main life force they are more likely to develop conditions like Crohn’s disease, heart disease, high blood pressure and infections. KAPA DOSHA This life force control muscle growth, body strength and stability, weight and immune system. This force can be disrupted by sleeping during the day, eating too many sweet foods and eating and drinking things that contain too much salt or water. If it’s one main life energy, practitioners believe one can develop asthma and other breathing disorders, cancer diabetes, nausea after eating and obesity.

Ayurvedic Treatment

A person who practices Ayurvedic medicine design specific treatment plans for each individual seeking this type of treatment, they take into consideration your unique physical and emotional makeup, balance between all three of these elements and your primary life force.

The main purpose of the treatment is the cleansing of the body of undigested food which stays in your body which eventually lead to illnesses. This cleansing process is called “Panchakarma”

Panchakarma

This process is designed to reduce symptoms and restore harmony and balance. The Ayurvedic practitioner rely on blood purification, massage, medical oils, herbs and enemas or laxatives.

It is therefore the belief of those who study CAM treatment that everything in the universe is connected dead or alive. If Harmony exist in body, mind and spirit with the universe then you are in good health. When this balance is disrupted in any way then you get sick. Those things that can upset this balance are: genetic or birth defects, injuries, climate and seasonal change, age and emotions.

HOW DOES IT WORK

There’s no national standard training or certification program There are a few state-approved Ayurvedic schools in the U.S. But for those who practice this alternative therapy. The FDA doesn’t review or approve Ayurvedic products. In fact, it’s banned certain ones from entering the country since 2007. What’s more, the agency has warned that 1 in 5 Ayurvedic medicines contain toxic metals, like lead, mercury, and arsenic. These heavy metals can cause life-threatening illness, especially in children. Always talk to your doctor before you try Ayurveda or any other alternative medical treatment.

Dementia

Dementia cannot be classified as a single desease but as a wide range of specific medical conditions or disorders. These disorders are grouped under the general term DEMENTIA.

Abnormal changes in the brain causes dementia. Because of these changes in the brain there is a decline in thinking skills also known as cognitive abilities severe enough to impair daily life and independent functions. Behavior pattern and relationships are also affected. One of he main and well known medical conditions is Alzheimere’s Disease.

The main cause of Dementia is due to damage of brain cells. When brain cells are damaged there is a lack of normal communication between the cell of the brain. When this happens, Thinking, Behavior and Feelings can be severly affected.

The brain is made up of many regions, in which each region is responsible for different functions eg. Memory, judgement and movement. If in a particular region the cells are damaged then the functions that particular region is responsible for becomes abnormal.

SIGNS OF DEMENTIA.

MEMORY LOSS AND OTHER SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA

Signs of dementia can vary. Example:

  1. Problem with long term memory.

  2. Keeping track of personal possessions.

  3. Paying bills

  4. Planning events and preparing programmes.

  5. Remembering things.

  6. Wandering around

Many of these conditions are progressive ie. These signs of Dementia start slowly and gradually develop to a worse condition.

There is no known specific test to determine if someone has Dementia. Doctors depend on known symptons and family history to make a diagnosis.

Damage to brain cells in a particular region of the brain is associated with different types of Dementia. For example in the case of Alzheimer’s disease, this is caused by high levels of a certain protein inside and outside of the cells in a particular region of the brain causing abnormal communication amoung the cells, thus causing memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients.

Alzheimer’s disease is aprogressive form od Dementia in older people.

There are different forms of Dementia. These are:

  • Progressive Dementia.

  • Vascular Dementia.

  • Lewy Body Dementia.

  • Frontotemporal Dementia.

  • Mixed Dementia.

PROGRESSIVE DEMENTIA

Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Although not all causes of Alzheimer's disease are known, experts do know that a small percentage are related to mutations of three genes, which can be passed down from parent to child. While several different genes are probably involved in Alzheimer's disease, one important gene that increases risk is apolipoprotein E4 (APOE).

Alzheimer's disease patients have plaques and tangles in their brains. Plaques are clumps of a protein called beta-amyloid, and tangles are fibrous tangles made up of tau protein. It's thought that these clumps damage healthy neurons and the fibers connecting them.

Other genetic factors might make it more likely that people will develop Alzheimer's.

VASCULAR DEMENTIA.

Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood supply to the brain due to diseased blood vessels.

To be healthy and function properly, brain cells need a constant supply of blood to bring oxygen and nutrients. Blood is delivered to the brain through a network of vessels called the vascular system. If the vascular system within the brain becomes damaged - so that the blood vessels leak or become blocked - then blood cannot reach the brain cells and they will eventually die.

This death of brain cells can cause problems with memory, thinking or reasoning. Together these three elements are known as cognition. When these cognitive problems are bad enough to have a significant impact on daily life, this is known as vascular dementia.

LEWY BODY DEMENTIA

Lewy body dementia. Lewy bodies are abnormal balloonlike clumps of protein that have been found in the brains of people with Lewy body dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. This is one of the more common types of progressive dementia. Common signs and symptoms include acting out one's dreams in sleep, seeing things that aren't there (visual hallucinations), and problems with focus and attention. Other signs include uncoordinated or slow movement, tremors, and rigidity (parkinsonism).

FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA

Frontotemporal dementia. This is a group of diseases characterized by the breakdown (degeneration) of nerve cells and their connections in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, the areas generally associated with personality, behavior and language. Common symptoms affect behavior, personality, thinking, judgment, and language and movement.

MIXED DEMENTIA

Mixed dementia. Autopsy studies of the brains of people 80 and older who had dementia indicate that many had a combination of several causes, such as Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and Lewy body dementia. Studies are ongoing to determine how having mixed dementia affects symptoms and treatments.

Prevention

There's no sure way to prevent dementia, but there are steps you can take that might help. More research is needed, but it might be beneficial to do the following:

  • Keep your mind active.

  • Keep your mind active.

  • Be physically and socially active.

  • Quit smoking.

  • Get enough vitamins.

  • Manage cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Treat health conditions.

  • Maintain a healthy diet.

Living a Vegan Lifestyle

Going vegan is easier than ever before! While many cultures have thrived on the vegan  diet for centuries, the idea of not eating meat is only now gaining global acceptance.

Here are some reasons why someone may choose to go vegan.

Reason # 1: Health

Years of research have confirmed a well balanced vegan diet can easily provide all the  nutrients we need to thrive. In fact, a plant-based diet is the only diet that has been  scientifically proven to reverse heart disease and prevent certain cancers.

Reason # 2: The Environment

Animal agriculture is the single most significant human-caused source of greenhouse  gases, land use, and land degradation, the number one source of freshwater pollution,  and the leading driver of rainforest destruction. It is also a significant cause of air  pollution, habitat loss, and species extinction, and is a highly inefficient use of limited  natural resources. In fact, the United Nations has called for a global shift to a vegan diet  wherever possible as the most effective way to combat climate change, world hunger,  and ecological devastation.

Reason # 3: Animal Welfare

Many people are concerned with the treatment of animals raised for food and as a  result, forgo the consumption and use of any animal-derived product.

No matter your reason for exploring the vegan diet, I’m here to help you make the  transition!

Caregiver Burnout

Caregivers are persons who render care to another person who has a disability or who has a medical condition resulting in them unable to care for themselves, also with elderly persons who cannot get around on their own without assistance.

There are different types of care givers that provide specific care: they are the family caregiver and the temporary or short time caregivers. Temporary care givers usually replace a family caregiver for a short time so as to give the family caregiver a break.

In-home caregivers develop a personal relationship with the person they are taking care of. They help with the laundry, cooking and also medication reminders.

A caregiver helps with daily activities, such as:

  • Preparing meals

  • Running errands

  • Bathing

  • Performing medical tasks, such as setting up tube feedings and giving medications.

To an outsider caregiving may seem like an easy job, but anybody involved in caregiving especially In-Home caregiving will discover it is a complicated job.

Caregiving is a high stress job that can lead to emotional drain, it can also be gratifying and challenging, long hours of heavy workloads can lead to Burnout.

At some point in their career a majority of caregivers will experience burnout, which causes physical, emotional and mental exhaustion, resulting in them feeling Alone, Unsupported and Unappreciated. Most of the times these workers neglect to take care of themselves leading them into a depressing state of mind which they would eventually losing interest in caring for their client properly. For this very reason caregiver burnout can be harmful to both the caregiver and the person being taken of.

Physical signs of caregiver burnout are:

  • Body aches and pains

  • Fatigue

  • Frequent headaches

  • Increased or decreased appetite that may cause changes in weight

  • Insomnia

  • Weakened immune system leading to frequent infections.

Testimonials

Testimonial to Karen Pascal

-Who I most dearly consider my Mother from a past life that has been sent back to guide me on my journey.

Words may fail me, but you never did- and for this, I must thank you for all you have done. I wish I had all the words to express my appreciation for you being a part of my life.

You have helped and stood by myside throughout ALL tough times, and boy were they many. But never once did you turn your back on me no matter how much I reached out.

I consider you my role model for many reasons. I also consider you my personal Angel. I would not have been where I am today if it were not for your support, motivation, encouragement and financial assistance you rendered me in my tough spots.

You would also encourage me to never give up on life no matter tough times and thought me to put my trust and faith in God. You also helped me to see that I was born with greatness and it was just a matter of discovering the abilities stored within.

I remember we would talk for hours and hours and I would always express my desires to you. Like one of my biggest desires, to travel which I shut out because I never believed it could happen for me. I am proud and grateful that this denial of my desire has now come to pass. And this has been made possible because of your constant reminders that all things are possible once you believe in yourself.

You thought me the art of “Manifestation-- Whatever you want/desire in life speak it into exitance”, and I’m a living testimony. My journey begun with constant travel back and forth to Trinidad and every time we talk, we would laugh and laugh, our way of expressing to each other that difficulties can be overthrown. Then for the first time I travelled beyond Trinidad, the evening you came out to visit me in Louisiana Lafayette, my heart melted because it was a surreal moment. Right there and then I knew that you were placed in my life for a purpose.

I can go on and on because there are endless stories to tell of us throughout the almost 2 decades of knowing each other but I think we both hold those close in our hearts, where they rests best.

You are my inspiration and always will be, as I know you are to many others and you have helped to carve me into the young adult I am now.

I thank you for everything Karen and I love you with all my heart and I ask that you continue to be and do the work of God that he has clearly sent you here to do.

Yours

Most Gratefully

Shannon Andr’e Persaud

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I have known Karen for many years both at a personal and professional level and she has indirectly been been serving as my Coach, without both of us even realizing it.

There have been times in my life when I have been faced with so many challenges both in my personal, work and relationship to the point where I felt overwhelmed and had no answers on how to proceed.

Karen turned out to be my saving grace, she was always available to listen to me vent and with her positive energy, we spoke about the situation and she guided me to cope and be more relaxed and focus on dealing with the positive and leaving out the negative. I must say that after a session speaking with her via telephone I felt calm and ready to face life in a positive manner.

Karen actually advised me to grow closer with the Lord and encouraged me to fast and pray with reverence for things to work out.

I am happy to say that today I can cope with any situation that is thrown my way and I am able to deal with the emotional roller coaster that is called life.

Sincerely,

Patricia
